On February 26, the CAM (Center for Applied Mathematics), led by Shandong University was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, becoming one of the first 13 national CAMs.
National CAM is a major part of state scientific and technological innovation system and the setup of Shandong CAM is an important strategic measure of Shandong Province and Shandong University to implement Several Opinions of the State Council on Comprehensively Strengthening Basic Research and Plan on Strengthening Scientific Research of Mathematics. Relying on Shandong University, the center gives full play to the advantages of Shandong University's mathematics and talent team, and works together with relevant universities, scientific research institutions and key enterprises in Shandong Province.
Shandong CAM is established to meet major national strategic demands. Focusing on key industry issues, it will start research on interdisciplinary theory and application featuring nondeterministic problem and nonlinear expectation to help relevant industries solve problems and break through bottlenecks. The center makes research on interdisciplinary problems related to nondeterminacy and trains talents by incorporating the characteristics of local industries in Shandong Province and the mathematics advantage of Shandong University, and focusing on key problems (such as financial risks, cryptographic computation, marine dynamical system simulation, accurate medical big data and intelligent control system) in industries like finance, information security, energy, life health and AI, based on nonlinear expectation theory and technologies such as financial mathematics, cryptographic mathematics, marine mathematics, life mathematics, intelligent mathematics and communication mathematics. It is another important platform for Shandong University to serve the economic development of Shandong.
National CAM aims at establishing a communication platform of mathematical science and mathematical application to strengthen cooperation and exchanges between mathematicians and scientists and entrepreneurs in related fields, focus on, propose, extract and solve mathematical problems in key national scientific and technological tasks, important projects and development of regions and enterprises, promote the integration of mathematics with engineering application and industrialization and enhance the support of mathematics for innovative development.
Since the preparation of building Shandong CAM, important special project of key scientific problems in revolutionary technology of national key national research and development program has been approved and put into operation, marking that the CAM has made significant progress in serving significant industry needs. Next, Shandong CAM will continue to focus on key national demands, extract mathematical problems, overcome scientific problems and make breakthroughs in original achievements, to support the construction of an innovative country and a world scientific and technological power with high-level mathematical research.
